Responding to climate change
We enhance climate governance and refine our climate strategy to better manage climate-related risks and opportunities.
Climate governance

Climate governance is integral to Alibaba's ESG governance and risk management system. The Board's Sustainability Committee oversees climate-related risks and opportunities, evaluating response strategies and tracking progress toward targets. The ESG Strategy and Operations Department has established a cross-functional Climate Change Working Group, comprising members from Legal and Compliance, Internal Control, Enterprise Risk Management, and Investor Relations. The Group coordinates with businesses to drive the implementation of climate initiatives.

Climate strategy and action
Climate risks and opportunities
Climate actions
Based on low-emission and high-emission climate scenarios from the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) and the International Energy Agency (IEA), we conduct climate risk and opportunity assessments across our international and domestic e-commerce, cloud computing, logistics, and other businesses, covering short, medium, and long terms.
Physical risks
Physical risks
Physical risks mainly include extreme heat, floods, tropical cyclones, water stress and droughts. While they are generally manageable over the short term, their impact may escalate in the high-emission scenario over the medium- to long term.
Transition risks
Transition risks
Transition risks mainly concern policies, legal requirements, markets, technologies, and reputation.
Transition opportunities
Transition opportunities
Transition opportunities primarily arise from improved resource efficiency as well as innovations in products and services. They may increase amid our low-carbon transition.
Climate risk management

We integrate climate risks into Alibaba Group's risk taxonomy, where they are evaluated against standardized criteria and managed in tiers based on impact and likelihood. In FY2026, we launched an internal platform empowering our businesses to identify and assess physical climate risks. Additionally, we leverage a dedicated monitoring system to track climate events and dynamically validate our assessments.
