Jack Ma is our lead founder and, since May 2013, has served as our executive chairman. From our founding in 1999 until May 2013, Jack served as our chairman and chief executive officer. He is also the founder of the Zhejiang-based Jack Ma Foundation.
Jack currently serves on the board of SoftBank Group Corp., one of our major shareholders and a Japanese corporation listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange. He is also a member of the Foundation Board of the World Economic Forum, chairman of the Zhejiang Chamber of Commerce, as well as chairman of the China Entrepreneur Club. In January 2016, he was named a Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) advocate by the United Nations.
Jack graduated from Hangzhou Teacher's Institute with a major in English language education.
Joe Tsai joined Alibaba Group in 1999 as a member of the founding team and has served on the company’s board of directors since its inception. He was chief financial officer until 2013 and is currently executive vice chairman. He serves on the investment committees of Alibaba Group and Ant Financial and is a founding member of the Alibaba Partnership.
From 1995 to 1999, Joe was a private equity investor based in Hong Kong with Investor AB, the main investment vehicle of Sweden's Wallenberg family. Prior to that, he was general counsel of Rosecliff, Inc., a management buyout firm based in New York. From 1990 to 1993, Joe was an associate attorney in the tax group of Sullivan & Cromwell LLP, a New York-based international law firm.
Joe is qualified to practice law in the State of New York. He received his bachelor's degree in Economics and East Asian Studies from Yale College and a juris doctor from Yale Law School.
Daniel Zhang joined Alibaba Group in 2007 and was named chief executive officer in May 2015. He serves on Alibaba Group’s board of directors and is chairman of Cainiao Network, a founding member of the Alibaba Partnership and a member of Ant Financial’s investment committee.
Over the years, Daniel has held top management positions across the organization, most recently serving as chief operating officer. In this role, Daniel oversaw the operations of all Alibaba Group businesses in China and internationally. He led the company’s ongoing transition to mobile and built Cainiao Network, a comprehensive global logistics network. Daniel also leads several of Alibaba Group’s strategic investments, including Haier, Intime Retail and Singapore Post.
Daniel first joined the company as chief financial officer of Taobao Marketplace in August 2007. In 2008, he was appointed chief operating officer of Taobao Marketplace and general manager of Taobao Mall. Under Daniel’s leadership, Taobao Mall rapidly became one of Alibaba Group’s most important businesses. When Taobao Mall was rebranded as Tmall and became an independent business unit, Daniel was named president of Tmall. Daniel was the key architect of 11.11, Alibaba Group’s annual signature event on November 11 and the world’s largest online shopping phenomenon.
Daniel is the chairman of Sun Art, a company listed on Hong Kong Stock Exchange. He also serves on the board of Weibo, a company listed on NYSE.
Before joining Alibaba Group, Daniel served as chief financial officer of Shanda Interactive Entertainment Limited, an online game developer and operator then listed on NASDAQ. Prior to that he was a senior executive of PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Audit and Business Advisory Division in Shanghai.
Daniel received a bachelor’s degree in finance from Shanghai University of Finance and Economics.
J. Michael Evans was named president of Alibaba Group in August 2015. He is currently responsible for spearheading the company’s public affairs across the Americas and Europe, while serving as special advisor to the chief executive officer on strategic initiatives in international markets. He also serves as a member of Alibaba’s board, having served as an independent director since the company’s initial public offering in September 2014.
From August 2015 to November 2017, Michael was in charge of leading and executing Alibaba Group’s international growth strategy for globalizing the company and expanding its business outside of China.
Michael served as vice chairman of The Goldman Sachs Group, Inc. from February 2008 until his retirement in December 2013. He served as chairman of Asia operations at Goldman Sachs from 2004 to 2013 and was the global head of Growth Markets at Goldman Sachs from January 2011 to December 2013. He also co-chaired the Business Standards Committee of Goldman Sachs from 2010 to 2013. Michael joined Goldman Sachs in 1993, became a partner of the firm in 1994 and held various leadership positions within the firm's securities business while based in New York and London, including global head of equity capital markets and global co-head of the equities division, and global co-head of the securities business.
Michael is a board member of City Harvest. He is also a trustee of the Asia Society and a member of the Advisory Council for the Bendheim Center for Finance at Princeton University. He joined the board of Barrick Gold Corporation in August 2014 and was appointed as an independent board member of Castleton Commodities International LLC in October 2014.
Michael received his bachelor's degree in politics from Princeton University in 1981.
Maggie Wu has been our chief financial officer since May 2013. She served as our deputy chief financial officer from October 2011 to May 2013.
Maggie joined our company in July 2007 as chief financial officer of Alibaba.com and was responsible for instituting Alibaba.com's financial systems and organization leading up to its initial public offering in Hong Kong in November of that year, as well as co-leading the privatization of Alibaba.com in 2012. She was voted best CFO in FinanceAsia's annual poll for Asia's Best Managed Companies in 2010. In 2018, she was named one of the world’s 100 most powerful women by Forbes.
Before joining our company, Maggie was an audit partner at KPMG in Beijing. In her 15 years with KPMG, she was lead audit partner for the initial public offerings and audits of several major large-cap Chinese companies listed in international capital markets and provided audit and advisory services to major multinational corporations operating in China.
Maggie is a member of the Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). She received a bachelor's degree in accounting from Capital University of Economics and Business.
Judy Tong has been our chief people officer since January 2017, responsible for the company's talent and organizational culture which covers development, strategy formulation and implementation. She is also a director of Cainiao Network and one of the founding members of the Alibaba Partnership.
Since joining our company in 2000, Judy has served as director and senior director in departments including administration, customer service and human resources. Between 2007 and 2013, she served as vice president and senior vice president in departments including construction, real estate and procurement.
Starting in 2013, Judy led the formation of Cainiao Network and served at various times as chief operating officer, president, chief executive officer and non-executive chairwoman, overseeing the operations of the company.
Judy currently also serves as a board member of YTO Express Group Co., Ltd., a leading express courier company in China listed on Shanghai Stock Exchange.
Judy is a graduate of Zhejiang University.
Jeff Zhang has served as our chief technology officer since April 2016. In November 2018, he was also named president of the Alibaba Cloud Intelligence business group, which aims to establish an intelligent technology infrastructure powered by cloud computing for the age of the digital economy.
Prior to his current position as chief technology officer, Jeff was president of China retail marketplaces from May 2015 to April 2016, and president of Taobao Marketplace and the wireless business division prior to that. He joined our company in July 2004 and has held various management positions, at different times leading Taobao Marketplace's technology infrastructure team, the B2C development team and Taobao Marketplace's product technology development team from 2004 to 2011. He served as vice president of product technology and operations of Taobao Marketplace from June 2011 to March 2012, and vice president of website and technology of Alibaba.com's China operations from March 2012 to January 2013. From January 2013 to February 2014, he oversaw Juhuasuan (a sales and marketing platform for flash sales for Tmall and Taobao Marketplace merchants), local services, 1688.com, and Tmall.
Jeff studied computer science at Zhejiang University.
Sophie Wu has been our chief customer officer since January 2017.
Sophie joined our company in November 2000 and has served in several sales management roles, including general manager of regional sales, director and vice president of China Gold Supplier sales, and vice president of China TrustPass sales. Later, Sophie became vice president of Alibaba.com's supplier service division, responsible for leading her team to optimize service to China Gold Supplier members and enhance supplier quality. In March 2012, she was appointed the head of Alibaba.com's international operations and later also took charge of 1688.com. From October 2014 to February 2015, she also led the Rural Taobao team. Prior to her current position, Sophie served as president of Alibaba.com and 1688.com, our international and China wholesale marketplaces.
Before joining Alibaba Group, Sophie was sales and customer manager at a technology development company wholly owned by Zhejiang University.
Sophie holds a bachelor's degree in international trade from Zhejiang University and an EMBA degree from China Europe International Business School.
Tim Steinert has been our general counsel since July 2007 and also serves as our secretary. He represents Alibaba on the NYSE Listed Company Advisory Board.
From 1999 until he joined our company, Tim was a partner in the Hong Kong office of Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer. From 1994 to 1999, he was an associate attorney at Davis Polk & Wardwell in Hong Kong and New York, and from 1989 to 1994, he was an associate attorney at Coudert Brothers in Beijing and New York.
Tim is qualified to practice law in the State of New York and in Hong Kong. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Yale College and a juris doctor degree from Columbia University School of Law.
Jessie Zhang was named our chief risk officer in December 2017, responsible for data and information security across our platforms. She has also been our chief platform governance officer since December 2015, in charge of the governance of our retail and wholesale marketplaces.
Jessie served as financial vice president of Alibaba.com from December 2010 to October 2013 and deputy chief financial officer of Alibaba Group from November 2013 to June 2016. Before joining our company in 2010, Jessie was an audit partner at KPMG.
Jessie received a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Northeastern University in China.
Angel Zhao has been president of Alibaba Globalization Leadership Group since July 2017. She has also served as vice president of Ant Financial Services since May 2013.
Angel served as vice president of finance of Taobao, Tmall and Alimama from October 2009 to April 2013. Prior to that, she served as senior director of finance of Yahoo! China.
Before joining our company in 2005, Angel was the finance director of Danaher Motion, a manufacturer of motion control products.
Angel is a certified public accountant and a certified public valuer. She received an executive MBA degree from China Europe International Business School and a master’s degree in accounting from Tianjin University of Finance and Economics.
Chris Tung joined our company as chief marketing officer in January 2016. He has also been president of Alimama from November 2017 to November 2018.
Prior to his current position, Chris was the chief executive officer of VML China, a marketing agency, from October 2010 to January 2016. Before joining VML, he was at PepsiCo China from October 2004 to October 2010 where he served as vice president of marketing. Prior to that, Chris worked at Proctor & Gamble from 1995 to 1998, Gigamedia from 1998 to 2001 and L’Oréal from 2001 to 2003 in various senior management positions.
Chris received a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from National Taiwan University and a master’s degree in industrial engineering from University of Michigan, Ann Arbor.
Trudy Dai joined our company in 1999 as a member of our founding team. Since January 2017, she has been president of wholesale marketplaces responsible for Alibaba.com and 1688.com, our international and China wholesale marketplaces, as well as AliExpress, our international retail marketplace.
Prior to her current position, Trudy was our chief customer officer from June 2014 to January 2017. She served as senior vice president of human resources and administration of Taobao and Alibaba.com as well as our deputy chief people officer and chief people officer from 2009 to 2014. She was general manager of Alibaba.com's international operations from 2007 to 2008. Prior to that, she was vice president of human resources of China Yahoo! and the first general manager of Alibaba.com's Guangzhou branch, in charge of field and telephone sales, marketing and human resources in Guangdong Province. From 2002 to 2005, Trudy served as senior sales director of China TrustPass in Alibaba.com's China marketplace division.
Trudy received a bachelor's degree in engineering from Hangzhou Institute of Electrical Engineering.
Fan Jiang has served as president of Taobao since December 2017 and he assumed the additional role of President of Tmall in March 2019. Prior to his current position as President of Taobao, he had been responsible for the Taobao App since joining our company in August 2013.
Previously, Fan founded and served as chief executive officer of Umeng, a provider of mobile app analytics solutions for developers, which Alibaba Group acquired. Before founding Umeng in 2010, he worked in product development at Google China.
Fan received a bachelor's degree in computer science from Fudan University.
